Are we ready for video dating all over again?

For over 30 years now we have had the technology to make videos and share them fairly easily. This seems like the perfect way to get to know someone without actually meeting them. On a video you can really see what a person looks like, and how they sound and act. The perfect introduction. So why is it that video dating has never really taken off, and is this about to change?

Video dating in the 80s

Video dating in its first inception did acquire a following of sorts and as can be seen, people went to considerable lengths to record themselves and make a good impression:

The process was so much more complicated back then, with bigger cameras and having to post individual copies to all prospects. Yet now that the technology is much simpler to use, nobody is using it.

Tickr – will it work?

There are of course a few sites out there that do make video dating available, but nobody has successfully made it mainstream in the digital age. Now a new service, Tickr, hopes to change this and make video dating cool popular again. They have created a sleek new site where the profiles are all videos that users have created or shared. Its funny to watch and good fun for those who are used to the medium. However the question remains if many people will be confident about making videos of themselves and deciding what they want to share. You can judge for yourself from their example profile footage. I’m not sure these guys are making it look easy: Tickr

Vine + selfi stick making video more accessible sport than ever.

The thing that really makes us think video dating might be due a comeback is the rise of Vine. Here we can see evidence that, armed with high quality mobile cameras and selfi-sticks, ordinary people are starting to get good at making and editing videos of themselves. As you can see below, there are a lot of tongue in cheek example of ‘dating profiles’ in Vine, but at lest one company in America has started to take 6 second video profiles seriously with their new site Charm. Could these sort of looping five or ten second shorts be the dating profiels of the future?
